Welcome to The Japan News

Kyoto and Nara are well known as ancient centers of Japanese culture. But 1,000 years ago, big things were also happening in what is now Oita Prefecture in Kyushu.

Those big things included the carving of massive Buddhist religious art from the sides of stone cliffs.

A Yomiuri Shimbun reporter recently travelled to see these artworks and learn about local history.

To find out what he discovered, pick up The Japan News on Sunday, March 22.
